How to Match Tractor PTO Shafts and Universal Joints | Mulix

Learn how to match tractor PTO shafts, universal joints, yokes and cross bearings by spline, tube, length, series and working-angle requirements.

PTO and driveline fitment

Short answer

Send the tractor and implement models, PTO shaft or cross-bearing series, spline count, tube profile, collapsed and working length, guard requirement, cross-bearing dimensions, quantity and clear photos of both ends.

Length dataCollapsed length, working length, overlap and angle
Safety dataGuard, torque, shear-bolt or friction-clutch requirement

1. Record both tractor and implement connections

A PTO shaft is a connection between two machines. Record the tractor PTO output, implement input, spline count, shaft series and yoke or flange style at both ends. A shaft that fits the tractor may still be wrong for the implement.

Photograph each end straight on and from the side. Include the guard, locking pin, quick-release collar and any friction clutch or shear-bolt assembly.

  • Tractor model and PTO output specification
  • Implement model and input yoke or gearbox connection
  • Spline count, series, lock type and guard arrangement

2. Measure collapsed and working length

Measure the shaft from the center of one cross to the center of the other in its collapsed state, then record the expected working length and minimum overlap. Do not use maximum extension as the only length because insufficient overlap can damage the shaft.

Check the operating angle and whether the shaft needs a wide-angle joint. Length, angle and overlap affect both service life and safety.

  • Collapsed length and required working length
  • Minimum tube overlap and telescoping section
  • Operating angle, implement movement and clearance

3. Match the universal joint or cross bearing

For a cross bearing, measure the cap diameter, cap-to-cap width, cross-body width, circlip or snap-ring arrangement and grease fitting position. The dimensions must match the yoke, not only the catalog series name.

If a series code is available, send it together with the measurements. Different manufacturers can use similar series labels with different retaining methods or cap dimensions.

  • Cap diameter and overall cap-to-cap width
  • Cross-body width, retaining groove and grease fitting
  • Yoke bore, lock ring and matching PTO series

4. Confirm torque and protection before quotation

State the implement power, operating speed and duty cycle when selecting a complete PTO shaft. Confirm whether the application uses a shear bolt, friction clutch, overrunning clutch or another torque-limiting device.

PTO guards and safety components are part of the replacement requirement. Mulix checks the connection, dimensions and requested protection details before preparing a quotation.

  • Power, speed and operating duty
  • Torque limiter, clutch or shear-bolt requirement
  • Guard length, label and export-packing requirement

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I order a PTO shaft only by tractor horsepower?

Horsepower helps estimate the series, but it does not confirm spline, yoke, length, overlap or guard fitment. Both machine connections must be checked.

What measurements identify a PTO cross bearing?

Send cap diameter, cap-to-cap width, cross-body width, retaining method, grease fitting position and any series or OEM number.

Should PTO length be measured collapsed or extended?

Provide collapsed length, required working length and minimum overlap. The operating angle and implement movement should also be stated.

Do OEM references mean the PTO part is officially branded?

No. OEM and brand references are used only to describe compatibility unless an independent authorization is confirmed.

Need a PTO or cross-bearing match?

Send both connection photos, spline and series information, measurements, quantity and destination country for a fitment review.
